Blend one cup of warm milk with four to five dates and a pinch of cinnamon powder. Sip at bedtime. Dates balance the nervous system and milk contains  a natural compound that promotes sleep.

A popular folk remedy for colds

Place a thick slice of fresh onion in a cup or small bowl and pour on freshly boiled water. You may like to include a teaspoon of ground black peppercorns. Leave covered to infuse for at least 10 minutes, and drink the liquid whilst it is still warm, you can also eat the onion slice, this drink will help cleanse the airways and reduce congestion.

Onion soup is a great food for cold patient – especially if you add some fresh garlic and season well with ground black peppercorns – delicious! Another popular folk remedy is a poultice of roasted onion applied to the chest every 2 or 3 hours to help remedy a persistent cold. Again raw garlic could be added to increase the potency.

Just three servings a month of raw broccoli or cabbage can reduce the risk of bladder cancer by as much as 40%, researchers reported this week. Other studies show that dark coloured berries can reduce the risk of cancer, too, adding more evidence to growing body of research that shows fruits and vegetables, especially richly coloured varieties, can reduce the risk of cancer. Researchers at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, surveyed 275 people who had bladder cancer and 825 people without cancer.
